Author Vestdijk
Two hundred books
Simon Vestdijk published an enormous stream of stories, novels, (music) essays, poems, and letters. The Hannemahuis set aside a separate room for the first editions of all his books and the connection to his birthplace.
Traces of the life of Simon Vestdijk (Harlingen 1898–Utrecht 1971) can be found scattered throughout ‘Lahringen’, as the writer referred to Harlingen in his books. Directly opposite the museum, for example, stands the birthplace of the novelist, poet, essayist, translator, music critic, and physician. A stone's throw to the east stands his alter ego, Anton Wachter, cast in bronze, with a briefcase under his arm. The Vestdijk Room in the museum contains all of Vestdijk's published books, and he personally reads a poem about Harlingen to you there: ‘Stad aan de Wadden’. Old photographs, combined with quotes from his books about Harlingen, also provide a snapshot of the city where the writer lived.
Those who wish to see it all with their own eyes can take the 'Walking Route with Simon Vestdijk', which leads past fifteen locations that played a role in Vestdijk's life. The booklet containing the walking route is available for purchase at the museum.
